Following on from last week, I now know where I don't want to design for. I've decided that I don't want to design for a cafe setting, these areas tend to be used as work areas and many others are plugged into their phones. I also decided I don't want to design for a pub setting, this feels too far from where I started and although I know these tend to be more social areas it doesn't feel like the right direction for my project. What I do want is to create a one-to-one connection, a connection where people can understand each other and don't necessarily need words to do so. I want to create an abstract way of communicating. I want to design an object that links people together, paired objects perhaps, where colour could represent a range of different things. Where I think I'm headed, after looking through and talking about design styles, projects and products that inspire me I noticed that colour is a big thing that comes through. So with this in mind, there is a couple of things that I'm thinking of, one, linked objects that could change colour based on moods/feelings to encourage people to reach out. Two, using colour to represent events abstractly.
With these in mind, I started prototyping using Arduino to mock up a system that allows people to change the colour of an led light. I require two Arduino boards to send data it would take to create linked objects, so I am waiting to get another board to do so. As well as this I have been playing with form and how this product could work and look.
